The evening air was thick with the heavy, sweet scent of bruised stems and summer heat. For weeks, the rhythmic swipe of the curved scythes had been the soundtrack of Julian’s days, but now, as the sun dipped toward the horizon, the lavender harvest was finally done. Endless purple fields, rolling like waves to the edge of the plateau, stretched out beneath a sky bruised in violet and burnt amber.

Julian wiped a sleeve across his forehead, leaving a smudge of dust and pollen, and pushed open the heavy oak door of the old stone farmhouse. Inside, the thick walls held the cool memory of the afternoon, a welcome sanctuary after hours under the blazing Provençal sun. He paused by the window, looping the iron latch to secure the weathered wooden shutters just as the last rays of daylight caught the rugged stonework of the courtyard.

Stepping back outside with a chilled pitcher of water, he sat on the low stone bench near the well. The golden hour cast a warm, melting glow over the architecture, turning the ancient limestone the color of toasted honey. Above, the first stars were beginning to puncture the velvet dusk. Bees had long since retreated to their hives, leaving the courtyard in a profound, velvety silence broken only by the distant chirp of a solitary cicada. Julian poured himself a glass, watching the sunset bleed into the violet horizon, deeply content in the quiet heart of the countryside.
