The morning mist still clung to the ferns, weaving thin, ghostly ribbons through the dense pines before dissolving into the pale golden light of dawn. Silas stood on the wooden porch of the Old Forest Watermill, taking a slow sip from a chipped tin mug of black coffee. Beneath his boots, the ancient timber hummed softly, vibrating with the familiar, rhythmic heartbeat of the valley.

With a gentle shove of a rusted iron lever, Silas engaged the sluice gate. Outside, the forest stream—chilled from the high mountain springs—rushed eagerly into the newly opened channel. The sudden rush of water struck the massive wooden wheel with a muffled, heavy thud. For a brief second, the wheel groaned against decades of swollen oak and tightening iron bands, then surrendered to the current. *Splash, creak, grind.* Heavy paddles dipped into the froth, lifting and spilling silver cascades back into the creek, sending diamond-bright droplets flying into the damp air.

Below the wheel, mossy stones slick with emerald velvet lined the rushing banks, studded with stubborn clumps of wild bluebells and pale wood anemones waking up to the sun. The air smelled of damp earth, crushed pine needles, and the sweet, dusty promise of freshly ground rye. Inside the millstones began their eternal waltz, a low, grinding rumble that scared a blue jay from the thatched eaves. Silas smiled, pulling his wool coat tighter against the morning chill, ready for another quiet day in the heart of the rustic countryside.
