51 segments · synchedThe ocean was a sheet of bruised indigo, heaving with the quiet, subterranean breath of a gathering tempest. Far on the horizon, distant storm clouds massed like a ragged army, bruised purple and threatening fire, swallowing the last lingering embers of the sun. In the fading, dusky twilight light, the world seemed to hold its collective breath, caught in a breathless stillness just before the fury of the gale broke.
Captain Halloway gripped the damp wheel of his schooner, his eyes scanning the darkening expanse. The marine wildlife had vanished hours ago; the seabirds had fled inland, and the fish had sunk deep into the black safety of the abyss. There was only the low moan of the wind and the rhythmic, ominous slapping of deep ocean waves against the hull.
Then, the sea erupted.
It began not with a splash, but with a concussive roar that rattled the teeth in Halloway’s skull. From the churning trough of the swells burst an enormous humpback whale, a leviathan of mythic proportions defying the gravity of the deep. Water cascaded from its colossal, barnacle-studded flanks in a shimmering cascade of detailed texture, catching the dying violet light of dusk.
For a suspended heartbeat, time shattered. The creature hung suspended against the backdrop of rolling black clouds, a monument of raw, untamed power and impossible grace. Its obsidian eye, ancient and fathomless, seemed to sweep across the tossing vessel, acknowledging the puny existence of man before gravity reclaimed its due.
With a thunderous crash that sent a wall of spray washing across the deck, the giant plunged back into the sea. It left behind a whirlpool of white foam and a profound, echoing silence. The storm broke a moment later, unleashing its rain upon the waves, but Halloway barely felt the chill. He stood frozen at the helm, utterly humbled by the ghost that had risen from the twilight to dance with the storm.
