Salt crusted the windowpanes of the keeper's quarters, blurring the view of the churning grey sea below. Silas pulled his heavy wool sweater tighter against the autumn chill, listening to the familiar, rhythmic groan of the sturdy stone lighthouse. For forty years, the weathered blocks had withstood the Atlantic gales, a silent sentinel carved from the very cliffside it crowned.

Outside, the world was shifting. A thick, rolling autumn fog was stealthily creeping in from the horizon, swallowing the jagged rocks and erasing the boundary between water and sky. Silas checked his pocket watch. It was nearly five. Stepping out onto the narrow iron balcony, he drew in a sharp breath of salt and decaying kelp.

Suddenly, the last rays of the sun pierced through a sudden tear in the heavy clouds. The entire coastline erupted in a breathtaking display of golden hour light. The wet granite of the cliffs turned to copper, and the creeping fog banks caught fire, glowing in brilliant shades of amber and rose. It was a lonely, nostalgic atmosphere, the kind of beauty that made Silas's chest ache with memories of a life largely lived in solitude.

Down in the engine room, the clockwork gears of the great brass lens clicked into motion, a deep and steady heartbeat. As the sun dipped below the horizon, plunging the world into twilight, the lantern room flared to life. A powerful beam sliced through the gathering dark and the encroaching fog, cutting a golden path across the restless sea to guide the invisible ships safely home.
