The map in Tariq’s hand was little more than brittle flax and wishful thinking, yet here, rising from the vast Central Asian plain, was the ghost of a world once mapmakers dared not even edge.

He dismounted, letting the reins fall slack against his camel’s flank. Around him, the crumbling Silk Road ruins stood like broken teeth biting into the brilliant, unforgiving daylight. Centuries ago, these weather-beaten bricks had formed a bustling caravanserai—a sanctuary of silk, jade, and whispered languages where emperors' agents and nomad traders once crossed paths. Now, the grand arches were hollow frames, and the courtyards were swallowed by the flat, sun-baked earth.

As he walked deeper into the labyrinth of fallen masonry, the wind picked up. Faint dust clouds swirled through the empty doorways, hissing softly against the detailed, weathered brick textures as if whispering secrets of forgotten caravans. Tariq ran a gloved hand over a carved pillar, tracing the faint geometric patterns worn smooth by millennia of desert gales. For a brief moment, the howling breeze sounded like the jingle of camel bells and the bartering shouts of merchants long turned to dust.

He reached the center of what must have been the grand hall, where the open sky looked down like a vast, pale dome. Pulling a canteen from his pack, he took a long, warm swallow, then looked out toward the endless horizon where the plain blurred into the sky. The adventure that had driven him across borders and through unforgiving wastes felt suddenly heavy, yet strangely complete. He wasn't the first to stand amid these ruins, and he wouldn't be the last. Smiling, Tariq turned back toward his mount, leaving the ancient whispers to the wind.
