The horizon was a jagged seam of fire, bleeding amber and violet across the vast, rolling plains of the savanna. Old Matriarch Siku felt the vibrations in the soles of her feet long before she heard the rumble of the wind. She signaled with a low, sub-sonic groan, a command that rippled through the herd like a current.

Behind her, the family moved as a singular, rhythmic force. Dust clouds, kicked up by twenty-four heavy, calloused feet, swirled around them, catching the dying light until the air turned to gold. The calves pressed tight against their mothers’ flanks, their trunks curled in nervous curiosity, occasionally stumbling through the dry, knee-high grass. Siku’s skin, etched with the deep, grey canyons of a long life, glowed with the intensity of the sunset. She moved with a slow, deliberate grace, her tusks sweeping through the golden haze like polished ivory scythes.

They were travelers of an ancient rhythm, walking toward the distant promise of a hidden waterhole. As they pressed forward, the dust clung to their weathered hides, making them look like monuments carved from the earth itself. They pushed through the sweltering heat, ignoring the fatigue that tugged at their joints.

Finally, the ground began to soften, and the scent of damp, cooling mud drifted on the breeze. Siku slowed, letting out a soft, trumpeting exhale that was answered by the excited squeals of the youngest members. The herd coalesced around the dark, reflective surface of the water, a circle of giants beneath the deepening indigo sky. As the last sliver of the sun vanished, leaving only a glowing ember on the horizon, the family drank in the silence of the night, bound together by the journey and the land that had always been their home.
