The grain of the old wooden desk caught the warm afternoon light, glowing like amber beneath Julian’s fingertips. For hours, the only sound in the quiet room had been the crisp, rhythmic whisper of paper sliding against paper. Julian adjusted his glasses and leaned in closer, holding his breath as he made one final, microscopic adjustment to a wing tip.

Before him sat a gathering of fragile wonders, a vibrant origami crane collection born from squares of heavy pastel paper. There were mint greens the color of spring shoots, dusty lavenders that mimicked twilight skies, and soft peach tones that seemed to hold the warmth of a setting sun. Each bird was a masterpiece of delicate art, boasting meticulously detailed paper folds that gave the illusion of feathers ready to catch a breeze. They stood in a gentle semicircle, their needle-sharp beaks tilted upward as if they had just finished singing a silent melody.

Julian reached out with a bamboo stylus, gently nudging the smallest crane—a tiny creature folded from mint-colored paper—into alignment with the rest of the flock. He smiled, feeling the familiar weight of exhaustion lift from his shoulders. As a soft evening wind drifted through the open window, it rustled the papers on the desk. For a fleeting second, the flock seemed to shiver with life, a breathless flutter of pastel wings poised to take flight into the gathering dusk.
