Before the sun crested the jagged mountain peaks, Old Kiet stepped onto the narrow ridge of packed earth that wound between the paddies. The morning mist drifted in slow, ghostly ribbons, clinging to the high ridges and blurring the boundary between earth and sky. Beneath his bare feet, the cascading terraces swept downward in colossal, carved steps of vibrant emerald green, a living staircase descending into the belly of the valley.

Every morning began with the water. Kiet paused at the edge of the upper tier, where a hollow bamboo conduit channeled a mountain stream into the flooded field. He knelt, clearing away stray reeds to let the cold, crystal water spill gently into the next level down. The still surface of the paddy stirred, sending delicate ripples across the mirror-like water that captured the silhouettes of towering mountains and the pale lavender clouds above.

For generations, his family had shaped these steep slopes, coaxing life from stone and soil. It was a fragile balance; too much water would drown the young shoots, while too little would parched the emerald stalks before they could yield their grain. Kiet walked the labyrinth of earthen paths, his practiced eyes reading the depth of each pool and the health of every seedling.

As he reached a vantage point midway down the mountain, the first golden rays of sunlight broke over the eastern ridge, burning away the lingering fog. The mist dissolved into warm light, illuminating the vast amphitheater of stepped fields in an explosion of radiant green and gleaming gold. In the still water below, the entire sky seemed to float between the rice shoots, reflecting a world carved by patience, water, and time. Kiet smiled, adjusted his woven hat, and continued along the path, ready to greet another day on the terraces.
