Outside, the autumn rain tapped a restless rhythm against the glass, but inside the independent bookstore, time moved at the speed of a turning page. The air smelled of aged paper, worn leather, and the faint, comforting hint of roasted chicory. Tall wooden shelves, rich in grain and crowded with colorful book covers, stretched up to touch the shadowed ceiling, creating a labyrinth of quiet stories waiting to be told.

Julian stepped away from the front window, shaking the chill from his shoulders. He was looking for nothing in particular, which was always the best way to browse. Warm brass lamps cast a golden, buttery glow across the aisles, turning the dust motes dancing in the air into drifting sparks of amber. Every surface—from the scuffed pine floorboards to the heavy oak counter—spoke of countless quiet afternoons spent in the company of authors long gone.

Tucked away in the far corner, nestled between a section on forgotten cartography and a towering stack of poetry, sat the reading chair. It was an oversized, velvet-winged armchair with a worn depression in the cushions that practically whispered an invitation. On the small side table beside it rested a ceramic mug still trailing a wisp of steam.

Julian didn't hesitate. He pulled a thick, cloth-bound volume of translated myths from a nearby shelf, settled deep into the plush embrace of the chair, and tucked his feet under the hem of his coat. As he opened the cover, the outside world dissolved into a soft blur. Here, surrounded by the towering walls of literature, the storm could rage all it liked; he was entirely safe at the edge of another universe.
