Maeve had spent her entire life chasing deadlines in the grey, bustling heart of the city, but the moment her boots touched the cobblestones of the winding path, the frantic noise of her old life evaporated. Before her stood Rose Cottage, a sanctuary of ancient grey stone nestled deep in the rolling hills of the countryside.

Under a canopy of brilliant blue sky, the afternoon sun washed the garden in a warm, golden light. It was high summer, and the cottage seemed to breathe with life. Crimson, pink, and apricot roses cascaded down the walls, their heavy blossoms framing the windows and climbing the chimney like a living tapestry. The air was thick with their sweet, intoxicating fragrance, mingled with the earthy scent of the lush green grass and the gentle hum of bumblebees.

Maeve walked slowly, tracing the curve of the stone path. Every step felt like a transition into another world. She ran her fingers along the detailed stonework of the cottage walls; the stones were cool to the touch despite the summer heat, weathered by decades of gentle rains and winter frosts, yet standing as sturdy as they had for a century.

Reaching the heavy wooden door, she hesitated. Tucked beside the threshold was a weathered terra-cotta pot overflowing with delicate blue forget-me-nots. Beneath it, just as her grandmother’s letter had promised, lay a heavy brass key.

The key turned in the lock with a satisfying, metallic click. As Maeve pushed the door open, a gentle breeze rustled the rose petals behind her, sending a shower of soft pink down onto the stone path. She looked back one last time at the sun-drenched garden, the vibrant blooms, and the endless blue sky. For the first time in years, Maeve took a deep, unrestricted breath, knowing she was finally home.
