Mustangs in the Canyon

The air in the canyon tasted of baked earth and ancient stone. Long before the eye could catch them, the earth began to sing—a low, rhythmic thrumming that vibrated through the soles of the boots and rattled the loose pebbles on the ledge.

Then came the flash of motion against the burnt-orange walls.

A dozen wild mustangs erupted around the riverbend, turning the dry arroyo into a river of living muscle and kinetic fury. Sunlight caught the dust kicked up by their hooves, turning the golden haze into a glowing fog that rolled through the gorge. At the lead surged a scarred black stallion, nostrils flaring, his dark mane flying like a banner in a gale. Behind him, the herd moved as a single, breathing entity—bays, chestnuts, and roans, their muscular flanks rippling with every explosive bound.

For a breathless second, the canyon walls amplified the thunder of their hooves into a deafening roar that drowned out the wind. There was no hesitation in their stride, only the pure, untamed instinct of survival and freedom.

As quickly as the storm had broken upon the canyon, it swept past. The dust cloud lingered, hanging thick in the warm desert light, slowly settling back onto the stone. The echoing thunder faded into the distance, leaving behind only the profound, breathless silence of the desert, and the faint, sweet scent of crushed sage.
