The ravine narrowed like the jaws of a sleeping beast, choked with ancient ferns and towering mahoganies that had stood undisturbed for centuries. Above the canopy, the sky bled a violent, bruised purple and burning amber as the sun surrendered to the horizon.

Inside the cockpit of the rescue helicopter, the instrument panel glowed like a constellation of warning lights. Sweat stung Cole’s eyes, but he couldn't blink, not with the crosswinds howling up the canyon walls. Below them, through the twisting tendrils of valley mist, a faint, rhythmic strobe flickered from a jagged outcrop of rock.

"Forty feet! Thirty feet!" shouted Elena from the open side door, her voice barely cutting through the deafening roar of the twin turbines.

Cole locked his jaw, his hands white-knuckled on the collective and cyclic. He pushed the aircraft lower, wedging the heavy metal bird into the vertical slot of the jungle canyon. As the skids dipped beneath the level of the treeline, the immense rotor wash struck the emerald canopy like a physical blow. Massive trunks bent in unison, violently whipping back and forth, while a localized hurricane of shredded leaves, water droplets, and jungle debris exploded upward into the fading light.

The helicopter bucked, caught in the thermal updrafts bouncing off the stone walls. Cole fought the cyclic, muscles straining as he held the hover steady over the tiny clearing.

"Winch is hot! Going down!" Elena yelled, disappearing from the threshold as she dropped the harness into the green abyss.

Time compressed into the shriek of metal, the smell of ozone and wet earth, and the blinding glare of the dying sun catching the mist. Through the swirling chaos, Cole saw the red jacket of the survivor tethered to Elena, rising smoothly toward the cabin floor. He held his breath, making micro-adjustments as the weight shifted the aircraft.

With a heavy thud, the rescue line locked. Elena gave the universal thumbs-up from the doorway.

Cole didn't waste a second. He pulled up hard on the collective, roaring the engines as the helicopter surged vertically out of the canyon, leaving the bent trees whipping wildly in their wake and racing up toward the safety of the open sky.
