The boots of Kaelen’s biosuit crunched rhythmically against the infinite expanse of the barren, ashen landscape. For three days, he had journeyed across the dead geology of the upper plateau, a world stripped of color save for the bruised, dusky orange light bleeding through the heavy, toxic atmosphere. There was no wind, only the low, seismic thrum of the earth shifting in its sleep.

Ahead of him, cutting into the twilight sky like a jagged crown, rose the immense silhouette of the volcanic crater. It was a masterpiece of destruction, its detailed rock textures scarred by ancient rivers of obsidian and coated in a fine, powdery grey soot. As Kaelen drew closer to the base, the air grew noticeably warmer, fogging the interior of his visor.

He paused at the rim, looking down into the abyssal throat of the giant. Wisps of faint sulfur steam drifted upward, smelling faintly of old rot and primordial creation, blurring the boundary between the scorched stone and the darkening heavens. It was a dramatic, ominous vista, entirely devoid of life yet pulsing with raw, unbridled power. Kaelen reached out, pressing a gauntleted hand against the warm stone, and smiled beneath his helmet. Here, at the edge of the world, he had finally found the core of the planet’s beating heart.
