The climb had tested the limits of endurance, but at last, Kael stood at the jagged precipice, the rough stone biting into his gloved hands. Below him yawned a colossal volcanic crater, its sheer walls formed of ancient, jagged black basalt that seemed to swallow the fading daylight. The geology of the abyss was a brutal testament to earth’s primal fury, sculpted by fire and frozen in time.

A biting spring wind swept across the ridge, carrying with it a fine, gritty tasting ash that dusted his shoulders and stung his eyes. High overhead, heavy plumes drifted sluggishly against a bruised, muted dusk sky that cast an ominous, twilight glow over the entire landscape. Yet, defying the desolate gloom, a breathtaking sight rested at the bottom of the caldera: a vast, steaming turquoise crater lake. Its vibrant, mineral-rich waters shimmered like a fallen gemstone, sending up thin ribbons of white vapor that spiraled lazily toward the darkening heavens.

As the temperature plummeted with the approaching night, Kael zipped his jacket tight against the chill. The air smelled of sulfur and rain. He took one final, lingering look at the surreal contrast of scorching depths and freezing heights, feeling profoundly small against the raw, untamed heartbeat of the earth before turning back down the trail into the gathering dark.
