The first sigh of dawn brushed across the Mediterranean hillside, painting the ancient stone in shades of bruised gold and soft rose. High above the sleeping coastline, the weathered amphitheater woke from another century of dreams. Carved deep into the earth and living rock, the great crescent of seats stretched outward like open arms waiting for an audience that had long since turned to dust.

Demetrius walked barefoot down the limestone tiers, his steps making no sound against the moss. He was the caretaker of ghosts, though he drew breath and felt the chill of the morning air. Wild olive trees, gnarled and silver-leaved, pushed boldly through the cracks where tragic choruses once sang, their roots drinking from the same deep cisterns that had quenched the thirst of Romans and Greeks before them. He paused, running a calloused palm over a block of detailed marble, feeling the cool, stubborn permanence of a world built to outlast its creators.

He stood at the center of the orchestra pit, where the acoustic perfection of the architecture still held the ghost of a whisper. Closing his eyes, Demetrius imagined the roar of the crowd, the clash of wooden swords, the soaring notes of a flute playing to the rising sun. But there was no sound today save for the rustle of olive leaves in the morning breeze and the distant, rhythmic crash of the sea below. It was a historic, contemplative atmosphere, heavy with the beauty of what had been and the quiet grace of what remained. He smiled, opened his eyes to the golden light flooding the stage, and began his daily sweep, sweeping away yesterday's fallen leaves from a stage that belonged to eternity.
