The monsoon rain fell in a steady, rhythmic pulse, washing centuries of dust from the ancient stone. Kael ducked beneath the heavy overhang of a weathered carved pillar, wiping the humidity from his brow. Around him, the jungle clearing breathed out a thick, fragrant mist, heavy with the scent of wet earth and crushed orchids.

He had tracked the rumors of the lost shrine for three days through the choking green labyrinth, but nothing could have prepared him for the reality of it. The architecture was immense yet hauntingly delicate, swallowed whole by grasping vines and deep velvet patches of moss. Every square inch of the ruins was a canvas of forgotten deities and cosmic serpents, worn smooth by the relentless passage of tropical storms.

As the first pale fingers of gentle dawn light pierced the canopy, the atmosphere shifted. The dim, shadowy gloom of the clearing caught fire, turning the dripping rainwater into scattered diamonds against the dark stone. A sudden hush fell over the jungle, silencing even the deafening hum of the cicadas. Kael held his breath, watching the golden light sweep across the courtyard and illuminate the inner threshold of the temple. In that momentary stillness, touched by the waking breath of a new day, the ruins no longer felt dead—they felt alive, waiting patiently for a world that had forgotten them to remember once again.
