The brass handle of the cabin door was ice-cold against Julian’s glove, but inside, the air smelled faintly of pine and old cedar. He gave the heavy door a final pull, latching it securely just as the motor above engaged with a low, reassuring hum.

Below them, the alpine village seemed carved from sugar cubes and charcoal. Wisps of smoke drifted lazily from stone chimneys, curling up toward the frosted eaves of wooden chalets where bright red geranium boxes had long been buried beneath deep drifts of winter snow. As the cable car glided smoothly away from the platform, the frantic murmurs of the station melted into a profound, breathless silence.

They hung suspended between earth and sky, a solitary red cabin traversing the vast, frozen valley. Thick steel cables stretched out ahead, disappearing into the blinding white mist that clung to the jagged, snow-capped peaks. The sheer scale of the mountains made the village look impossibly fragile, yet fiercely resilient against the encroaching frost.

Julian pressed his forehead against the chilled glass, watching the intricate lattice of frost ferns bloom across the windowpane. Beside him, Clara pulled her woolen scarf tighter, her breath pluming in the dim light of the cabin.

"Look," she whispered, pointing down.

A lone skier carved a sharp, elegant line down the distant slope, sending up a glittering spray of powder that caught the pale afternoon sun. Then, they crested a sudden ridge, and the valley opened fully before them—a masterpiece of ice and light, stretching endlessly toward the horizon. The cable car swayed gently in the crisp mountain wind, carrying them steadily onward into the heart of the winter wilderness.
