The wind up on the twelfth-floor ledge carried the faint scent of hot asphalt and distant exhaust, the lingering breath of a busy afternoon finally giving way to the evening. Maya pulled her leather jacket tighter around her shoulders and stepped out onto the gravel-strewn rooftop, leaving the clamor of the stairwell behind.

Before her, the city spread out like a vast, jagged crown. The countless towers and high-rises formed a dark, intricate urban labyrinth, their countless windows beginning to blink awake with yellow light. Yet, for all their imposing height, the silhouetted buildings felt subdued tonight, humbled by the sheer spectacle unfolding above them.

The sky was a masterclass in color, a warm gradient that transitioned seamlessly from a bruised, deep violet overhead down to a blazing, molten amber at the horizon. The sun was sinking fast, bleeding streaks of orange and crimson across the clouds and casting a golden halo over the entire skyline. It was the kind of sunset that demanded you stop everything just to watch it burn out.

Maya walked to the parapet, resting her forearms on the cool concrete, and let out a long breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Down below, the streets hummed with their usual relentless energy, but up here, suspended between the earth and the fading light, the chaos faded into a rhythmic, distant heartbeat. She closed her eyes for a moment, soaking in the fading warmth of the day, ready to watch the city trade its gold for neon.
