The last train had rattled away ten minutes ago, leaving behind a silence so absolute it felt heavy. Marcus stood alone on the subway platform, his footsteps echoing softly as he paced near the yellow safety line. Above, the endless rows of fluorescent lights hummed a low, hypnotic frequency, casting a harsh, sterile glow over the damp concrete.

All around him, the station's detailed tile pattern stretched into the distance, a mesmerizing mosaic of grimy white and seafoam green that seemed to pulse slightly in the artificial glare. Urban solitude was a strange, rare luxury in a city of eight million, yet here it was, wrapped entirely around him like a cool, subterranean blanket. He checked his watch, the glowing digital numbers reading 2:14 AM. The air smelled of ozone, old dust, and the damp earth of the deep city.

A sudden gust of wind swept up from the dark tunnel to his left, rustling the discarded corner of a yesterday's newspaper and making the hanging wires sway. A distant, metallic screech signaled the approach of another car—perhaps the late-night maintenance run, or maybe just the groaning pipes of the old transit system playing tricks on his ears. Marcus tightened his grip on his coat, smiled faintly into the empty air, and stepped forward as the headlights finally pierced the dark.
